300 Below, Inc. 300 Below is the world's largest and oldest commercial cryogenics processing company. The company acquired its predecessor, CryoTech, to earn this title and has appeared numerous times on the Discovery Channel after setting the all-time viewer response record for its segment. The company is based in Decatur, IL and processes over a million pounds of steel each year.
Cryogenics is the science of improving metals to make them last longer and perform better. 300 Below's environmentally friendly process uses liquid nitrogen to slowly freeze metal objects down to -320°F. This 72-hour process has three equal phases consisting of the freezing, holding and thawing stages. Molecules are compressed during this process and, when they expand after thawing, they soon become equidistant from each other. This equidistance creates a metal structure that is more uniform and, thus, stronger.
Cryogenic processing is the science of improving metals to make them last longer and perform better. NASCAR & Indy 500 racing engines, weapons and optics used by our military, pieces of the Statue of Liberty, musical instruments, F-22 Raptor parts, NASA satellites, and Jack Nicklaus’ recent golf club line have all been treated by 300 Below and are only a few example applications. 300 Below is profitable and has spawned hundreds of operations in several countries worldwide. Customers in seven different industries provide many visual opportunities for filming in numerous locations around the world. Students will ultimately be responsible for taking this company to the next level by creating an upward sales trend and generating new interest for the company.
